 "2+1" - 2/7/13

As part of the First Thursday in the Pearl event, Fotoeffect Studio & Gallery is hosting a unique 3 person show - two photographers and one painter. Each artist explores the idea of image in their own way, showing us glimpses of personal moments, remote locations and even the stuff of dreams. More information about each artist and a sample of their work can be found below.

The exhibit will open 2/7/13 and be up through 2/24/13. We look forward to seeing you there!

"Out of Gas" - Digital Photograph as a photo-transfer on wood

"Out of Gas" - Digital Photograph as a photo-transfer on wood

Shamani Compton’s "Out of Gas" Photo-Transfer Selection:

In a section of Shamani Compton's Artist Statement she states: "My photography comes from a deep desire to capture and share the beauty of life. Each photo I take is a testament to appreciating my life and not taking it for granted. I want people who see my work to experience the same level of excitement for living as I experience when I am behind my camera. I want my photography to remind people that each moment we have on earth is sacred.

I use a transfer process to fuse my images to wood. I prefer this presentation to traditional framed photos because it allows me have an intimate experience with each image. When the ink is fused with the wood, the wood grain emerges and becomes part of the photo. The resulting organic texture and color creates a natural, earthy undertone that enhances the image on an emotional level. The finality of a digital image is not enough for me. Feeling the wood grain and ink beneath my fingers is a way for me to feel connected to the world around me and at the same time, share a piece of myself with others."

Kathy Krisinki’s "Black and White" Conventional Photography Selection:

In an age of digitalization, it is always refreshing to run across conventional photography, an art that is, unfortunately, slowly being lost. All of Krisinski's photographs are shot in black and white on 35mm film. The entire finished product is handcrafted. Each image is developed by hand in a dark rook and then individually printed and mounted.

When such care is seen in the creation of a product, it only makes sense that that would be carried into the images themselves. Inspired by her deep love of music, Krisinski photographed the many genres, from classical to rock, that she goes to listen to. What came out was a touching series on music as a universal language.

Jirí Sklenár’s “Head On” Acrylic Paintings Selection:

As Sklenar states on his website, he only recently became interested in painting. His background is actually in electrical and software engineering. Two disciplines that tend to be very rigid and exacting so it was much to his surprise that he found that picking up a paintbrush activated a whole different part of his brain and seemed to open a whole new world of possibilities.

His work vacillates between realism and abstraction with each brush stroke simultaneously studied and a swath of vibrant color. For Sklenar color is the key! It is what makes his paintings the flights of fantasy that they are.
